Using the revolutionary technology called rapid prototyping (aka 3D printing), the filmmakers were able to print face plates for each and every facial expression for Coraline and most other characters. However, since the faceplates were generated in two separate pieces (done intentionally so different brow and mouth expressions could be combined), it created a seam across the face. Although director Henry Selick wished to keep the seams in the film, the powers that be thought it too distracting… so, a few of the brilliant vfx minds at Laika developed a method of digitally erasing these seams.
